Primark is to offer 2,000 products online in a click-and-collect trial.

The items from their children’s range will be available to collect in a selection of stores.

The high street retailer has long resisted selling its products online, so could this make way for a loosening of its stance?

Here is what we know.

What is the trial?

Primark is to offer 2,000 children’s products as it trials click-and-collect services in more than two dozen stores in the North West of England later this year.

The business said the new trial will run out of 25 shops and give those who live nearer a smaller Primark access to a much wider range of items.

On Tuesday Primark’s parent company Associated British Foods (ABF) said: “Our average-size stores are only able to stock a limited range and for these customers the number of options available to them will broadly double, increasing even more for customers of our small stores.

“This trial will enable us to provide more fashion, licence and lifestyle products to more customers and more often.”

More details, including the stores taking part, will be confirmed in the coming months, Primark said.

This trial comes as the chain warned of “selective” price rises to come in the autumn.

What items will be available?

The retailer said customers will be offered a “much-expanded range with hundreds of new products exclusive to Click & Collect”.

These will be from their children’s range – from newborn babywear up to age 15 years – and will include “everything from clothing and accessories, to decorative nursery products and toys”.

Primark said its customers would be able to browse online, add items to their virtual shopping basket before checking out and paying for their order.

“They will then be able to collect their purchases at a newly created dedicated customer collection point in the heart of the store,” they said.

The move comes following the launch of its new UK website in April.

Primark said the website has enjoyed a 60 per cent increase in traffic with almost 15 per cent of customers using it to check in-store stock levels.

Will Primark ever offer complete online shopping?

It looks unlikely. Despite being hit hard by Covid restrictions when shops were closed it is not planning on offering its full range for online shopping.

George Weston, chief executive of ABF said the trial is not part of a wider plan to sell all of its products online

He told the BBC: “What you will never see is the entire Primark range available for click and collect, nor any of it available for home delivery.”

Home delivery, he said, was complex, not environmentally friendly and expensive.

He added that they were using online selling for click and collect “very selectively” and that they hoped when people came into stores to collect their purchases they would also buy something else while they’re there.
