Popular family business caught selling mouldy food - Wales Online

A businessman behind a convenience shop and popular Indian restaurant has been ordered to pay thousands after selling mouldy and out-of-date food. Ram Singh, who lives at the premises of the highly-rated Ogmore Vale Bar & Restaurant in High Street in the village, also runs the One Stop Shop a few doors down with the help of his wife. Earlier this year the store changed from a Londis to a One Stop Shop. In a court appearance this month Singh admitted that he committed five criminal offences when the site was a Londis. The offences all took place at the shop on the same day – July 2 last year. Singh: sold Natural Choice grated mature cheddar with a ‘best before’ of June 20, 2021, which had visible signs of mould and "was not of the quality demanded by the purchaser"; placed on the market a ‘premium black pudding’ which was unsafe after passing its ‘use by’ date of June 4, 2021; placed on the market a packet of ‘traditional cooked ham’ which was unsafe after passing its ‘use by’ date of June 30, 2021; placed on the market a two-litre container of Muller semi-skimmed milk which was unsafe after passing its ‘use by’ date of June 25, 2021, and; placed on the market two two-litre containers of Freshways full-fat milk which were unsafe after passing their ‘use by’ dates of June 29, 2021. The magistrates told him he must pay £750 in fines, prosecution costs of £2,000, and a victim services surcharge of £75 – making a total of £2,825. None of the unsafe items were sold at Ogmore Vale Bar and Restaurant, which has 1,200 Facebook 'likes' and an average rating of 4.8 stars out of five. Reviews on Restaurant Guru praise its "absolutely beautiful" and "stunning" food. When we approached the business for comment Mrs Singh said: "Ram had a stroke. He was sick. And there were staff sick with Covid. We were short of staff. It is not an excuse but this is why it happened. The takings were very down so we were hardly doing anything... She added: "I understand we didn't check as much as we should have. We are very sorry and doing everything right now. Since then we have learned and it won't happen again and we are very sorry... We can't apologise more." The criminal case was brought by Bridgend Council. You can read more of the latest Welsh court stories here. READ NEXT:
