Lakewood using online auction to sell old street signs - cleveland.com

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The auction bidding has begun for the first time in Lakewood regarding the sale of old street signs. This means, instead of considering any late-night thievery, prideful residents who dreamed of owning the street sign as a decorative item or memento can do so legally. “Due to reflectivity, usually the useful life on those signs can be anywhere from 10 to 20 years before they’re faded out or whatnot,” Lakewood City Engineer Mark K. Papke said. “So what the city does is keep up with our street sign inventory. This year we replaced 54 street signs.” While previously the city would sell old street signs for $25 each on a first-come, first-serve basis at its annual Community Festival, this year for the first time Lakewood is auctioning off the collector items online. “We wanted to make it more open to the public so we went through selling them on GovDeals.com,” Papke said. The bidding starts at $25 with the auction closing at 9 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 8). With a $10,000 budget, Lakewood replaces approximately 100 street name panels per year. After signs with reflectivity or other issues are identified by city inspectors traversing the community, the work is performed by the city’s in-house staff. In terms of neighborly bidding wars, that’s exactly what’s taking place on Northland Avenue and Rockaway Avenue where the price of the respective street signs is at $27 each. As for interest in the street signs, Papke said they’re popular. “People who live on their street -- like Northland Avenue or Detroit Avenue -- like to have one,” Papke said. “They use them to decorate their houses, garages and bars.” Read more news from the Sun Post Herald here.
