Bidding for the jersey worn by Cal Ripken Jr. on the night he ended his streak of consecutive games played at 2,632 is at $90,000.  So far, it’s been the most popular of the 63 lots consigned by Ripken to Goldin Auctions.  The jersey he wore in his first MLB game in August of 1981 currently has a high bid of $41,000.

The bat Ripken used in his first at-bat the night he broke Lou Gehrig’s record was also attracting a fair amount of bidding and was at $42,000 as of Tuesday night. The auction still has more than 10 days to run and prices on the top items will undoubtedly run much higher.

And yes, it appears the Ironman saved pretty much everything from his milestone moments.  You can bid on a single lot that contains his gloves, sunglasses and even the stuff he had on under his uniform during #2632, including his jock.

He was in Louisville Monday, stopping by the Museum and factory.

The Iron Man! The #legendary @CalRipkenJr swung by the museum yesterday and we couldn’t have been more excited. He stepped into The Bat Vault and signed our CNC lathe. Be on the lookout for his signature on your next visit!#Baseball #BaseballHistory #Orioles #HallOfFame pic.twitter.com/ETXmXHiD6T

In case you were wondering with Game 1 opening up Tuesday night….

Among the championship-related items in the collection at the Baseball Hall of Fame:

• The first and last pitched baseballs from the original modern day World Series in 1903

• The gloves worn by Al Gionfriddo (1947), Willie Mays (1954), who each made famous catches and Brooks Robinson (1970), who made multiple great defensive plays

• Babe Ruth’s bat from one of his two 3-HR games (1928)

• The Temple Cup, presented to the top two NL teams from 1894-97, is in Cooperstown, as is the Hall Championship Cup, presented to the 1888 World Champion.

Burbank Sports Cards was selected as one of two eBay sellers across the entire platform to shoot a video leading up to the holidays that is expected to bring even more exposure to the booming hobby.

The store was closed for part of the day Tuesday so filming could take place.

Normally, eBay would have sent its own production crew to the Southern California-based shop but COVID has put a lid on that. Instead, they shipped equipment and instructions to the store and put them in touch with their ad agency. Owner Rob Veres used a customer with video experience to shoot for him and an interview was conducted via Zoom.

Burbank is one of the largest sellers in the market with over 2.5 million items in its eBay store

They’ll be doing an Instagram takeover of the eBay account on Thursday morning.

A BGS 10 copy of LeBron James’ 2003-04 Topps Chrome rookie card was set to sell for a six-figure price Tuesday night on eBay.

That 1997 Metal Universe PMG Michael Jordan (red) with the Beckett ‘Altered’ grade went for $151,926.

Is It Time for eBay to Rethink Steep Penalty Fees?

“I’d like to call your attention to what I think is the largest scale abuse of sellers I’ve ever witnessed on the platform,” an eBay seller wrote us last week. He was talking about penalty fees instituted in 2018 – what eBay refers to as “Additional final value fees” on its policy page. For those unfamiliar with the fees, eBay charges additional Final Value Fees (commission) when sellers fail to meet performance expectations, including one for having a very high rate of returns for “Item not as Described.” eBay charges an additional 5% of the total selling price for sellers who incur the penalty. The reader, a Top Rated Seller, said eBay began charging him penalty fees this month – an additional $2,000 in fees so far – and he outlined problems he sees with the marketplace’s policy and practices. One reason for being subjected to penalty fees was that eBay didn’t adhere to…
