Businesses are being urged to download NHS QR codes to be displayed for visitors to use when they arrive.

Using QR codes will help businesses meet the new legal requirement to record the contact details of customers, visitors and staff on their premises.

New NHS COVID-19 app

Pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and cinemas must have NHS QR code posters visible on entry so customers who have downloaded the new NHS COVID-19 app can use their smartphones to easily check-in.

QR codes will be an important way for individuals to record their movements helping the NHS Test, Trace, Protect system. The NHS COVID-19 app will launch on Thursday 24 September and includes QR check-in at venues.

Create and display a QR code

You should create and display a QR code if you are:

A business, place of worship or community organisation with a physical location that is open to the public

An event which is taking place in a physical location

If you have more than one venue, you need to create a separate QR code for each location.

Getting a QR code

Businesses can download a QR code from the GOV.UK website:

Visitors will scan the QR code when they arrive, using the NHS COVID-19 app. This is to help trace and stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

A critical moment

Leader of Epping Forest District Council, Councillor Chris Whitbread said:

We must all follow the ‘Hands. Face. Space’ guidance to help control the virus and stop it spreading. It is important we support the Test and Trace programme – everyone is at risk of catching and passing on the COVID-19 virus. Cases of COVID-19 have started to rise again, it’s clear we’re facing a critical moment. If we are to avoid another lockdown we must change our behaviour or the virus will return. If a business is not supporting Test and Trace and not displaying a QR code, ask the manager why? If their answer doesn’t satisfy you, go somewhere else! The police and other enforcement officers will issue penalties to any business that does not comply. Help protect our community and the fight against coronavirus by using the NHS COVID-19 app – it’s up to all of us to keep ourselves, our loved ones and others safe.
