SPRINGFIELD — The state Office of Economic Empowerment, in collaboration with Citizen’s Bank, has developed a Childcare Starter Grant.

Fourteen grantees will receive up to $4,500 in funding toward business expenses that come with developing a home childcare program.

To be eligible for the grant, the applicant must live in Springfield or Lynn, display interest and ability to open a home childcare program and provide proof of completion of the Massachusetts Early Education and Care Strongstart Potential Provider Training for Family Child Care.

Alayna Tassel, executive director of the Office of Economic Empowerment, said this is a new, one-year pilot program, which they hope benefits the applicants who will receive funding.

“Lynn and Springfield are designated as childcare deserts being very difficult for families to find affordable, convenient childcare in their communities,” Tassel said. “With this opportunity, we’re really hoping that grantees can use this funding for related business expenses, but also really use the training too. We think can really help local residents that are looking to start their own childcare businesses.”

Tassel also said the office is grateful for Citizens Bank’s contribution to this program and for providing $40,000 worth of funding to develop this grant.

“Citizen’s Bank has been a tremendous partner to the office of economic empowerment,” Tassel said. “We’re thrilled that they are working with us now on this on this opportunity to expand childcare options here in Massachusetts.”

Prior to receiving financial assistance, grantees will be required to join a Family Childcare Network or a related system in their community or surrounding area.

Selected applicants will also have to participate in educational webinars on running small businesses and starting a childcare business in the state.

The deadline to apply and receive funding from the Childcare Starter Grant is Friday, Aug. 5.
