Amazon is planning to open at store at Galleria Dallas later this year in a space where the company has hundreds of employees next door.
The e-commerce giant is the largest tenant in the Galleria Towers connected to the three-level mall at LBJ Freeway and the Dallas North Tollway. Amazon’s tech hub has been a tenant there since 2014.
The retail space is 4,500 square feet and will cost $546,000 to renovate, according to planning documents filed with the state. The location is on the mall’s first floor.
Amazon and Galleria Dallas declined to comment. The filing says construction would begin in April and be completed in August.
Amazon has opened a couple of different concepts in malls. Amazon 4-star opened in Stonebriar Centre in Frisco in late 2019. The 4-star stores are stocked with about 2,000 items that are popular online, and everything in the store is rated four stars or above. The items are all top sellers or are new and trending on Amazon.com. There’s one other 4-star store in Texas at The Woodlands Mall.
Amazon has almost three dozen 4-star stores open and about a dozen in the works, including one listed as “coming soon” at Classen Curve in Oklahoma City.
The company also operates 24 Amazon Books stores that also sell some general merchandise. There are only two in Texas, at Domain Northside in Austin and Baybrook Mall in Friendswood near Houston.
There’s one more concept it could be.
Amazon Go is a convenience store with the retailer’s “just walk out” technology. Customers download the Amazon Go app on their phones, shop and leave without stopping at a traditional checkout. The receipt shows up on the app within a couple of minutes. Amazon Go stores are located in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and New York.
Amazon Web Services, which has employees in the Galleria Towers, has been marketing the technology behind Amazon Go stores to other retailers. Having an operating Go store next door that they could show potential retail customers could come in handy.
